Ilia Gershevich; (Born in 1914 - Died in 2001) was a famous Russian-born Iranologist. Ilya Gershevich's parents were Russians who immigrated to Germany. During World War I, Gershevich's parents go to Switzerland and Ilya is born in Zurich.
In 1933 he went to the University of Rome. He went to England in 1938. In 1948, he became the first associate professor of courses related to Iran at the University of Cambridge. In 1967, he became a member of the British Academy and shortly after that, he became a member of the Russian Academy. In 1971, the University of Bern gave him an honorary doctorate.
Among his works were researches on the Shakardi languages of southern Iran. Since then, he had worked on the comparative linguistics of Avestan, Sogdian, Assyrian, and Elamite languages. He also had research on Mazdasena and the history of the Achaemenid period.
Ilya Gershevich died in Cambridge.
