Hovhannes Tomanian has rightly been called the Armenian national poet, because in his poetry no other orator has been so influenced by Armenian proverbs, sayings, legends, and folklore. Tomanian's poetic nature, in this regard, has been nourished by various sources: first, from the fertile mind of his mother who had recited all those stories and tales to him as a child, second, from the rich memories of the villagers who had been with him since his childhood and who always cherished the memory of that playful seven-year-old cowboy who had grown up to be a poet many years later, and finally, from the study and practice he himself had done in Armenian literature.
