Colonel Chabert is supposedly killed on the field of honor in one of Napoleon's battles. Left for dead on the battlefield of Eylau and having lost his memory, he spent a year in an asylum. The novel begins when he returns to Paris, to the life he left behind, only to discover that, in his absence, his life - his family, his society, his identity - has changed. Napoleon is deposed, the aristocracy has returned to power, as if the revolution had never happened. His wife, believing he is dead, has remarried an aristocrat. Horrified because she claims she does not recognize him, and sickened by a society that does not recognize his former merits, Chabert vows to regain his money and reputation.
