9 color and 77 black-and-white illustrations on plates, 7 ascent sketches. On July 3, 1953, the Tyrolean mountaineer Hermann Buhl became the first person to reach the summit of the 8,125 m high Nanga Parbat alone (as a member of the 1953 German Himalayan Expedition led by K.M. Herrligkoffer). As early as 1895, the British alpinist A.F. Mummery attempted to reach the summit via the Diamir flank; the German expeditions of 1932, 1934, 1937, and 1938 all attempted the ascent in vain, but tragically failed. A total of 14 European and 17 local mountaineers died while attempting the first ascent of Nanga Parbat.
