The protagonist of the story is Mariana—a group therapist working in London. Her nephew, Zoe, now studying at Cambridge, calls her with the bad news: her best friend, Tara, has been murdered—stabbed multiple times and left in the woods. Mariana moves to Cambridge and begins her own investigation when the police arrest someone she believes is innocent. Clues lead him to Edward Fasca: a charming and charismatic university professor whose group of beautiful female students (including Tara) follow him like a mini-cult—a cult called the Maidens, a reference to the cult of Eloise in ancient Greece, whose followers worshiped Demeter and Persephone.
