This volume brings together two "methodological essays": Discourse on Narrative, contained in 1972 in Figures III, and New Discourse on Narrative, published in 1983. The second presents a theoretical update of the first, in light of the comments it has given rise to, and the advances in research that have resulted from it.
Developed from a rigorous study of the narrative regime of In Search of Lost Time, these two complementary works are today widely considered to be the founders of one of the major disciplines of poetics: narratology, or the structural analysis of the forms and processes of narrative, particularly in the field of literary fiction.
Gérard Genette (1930-2018)
A literary critic and literary theorist, founder and director of the journal Poétique and the collection of the same name, at Seuil, he is the author of a landmark work, devoted to the exploration of different literary forms (from Figures I in 1966 to Postscript in 2016).
