The book "The Garden of Evening Mists" is a novel written by "Tan Twan Eng" that was first published in 2011. After suffering a lot in a Japanese concentration camp during World War II, a 28-year-old woman named Yun Ling Teo makes her way to the only Japanese-style garden in her hometown of Malaya to meet its designer and caretaker, Nakamura. Persuade Aritomo—the former gardener of the Japanese emperor—to design a garden in memory of his sister, who died in the camp. Although Aritomo initially refuses this request, he later agrees to teach Ling so that he can start the garden himself. While trying to learn to work, Yun Ling develops an interest in Aritomo and also remembers the horrors of life in the camp and the hardships of the "state of emergency" in post-WWII Malaya.
