The rebellion was led by a prominent Negro preacher named Nat Turner, an educated slave who felt commissioned by God to exterminate all whites in the area.
"Confessions of Nat Turner" is narrated by Nat as he spends the cold autumn days in prison before his execution. The fascinating story runs throughout Nat's life and reaches its inevitable and crushing climax on that bloody day in August.
"Confessions of Nat Turner" is not only a masterpiece of storytelling. It also humanizes the disturbing essence of black slavery. Through the mind of a slave, "William Styren" recreates a cataclysmic event, mixing misfortunes, disappointments, and hopes, that caused this extraordinary black man to rise from the early fronts of our history and overthrow those who took his people captive.
William Styron (1925-2006), a native of Tidewater, Virginia, was a graduate of Duke University and a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. His books include Sleeping in the Dark, The Long Walk, Burning This House Down, The Confessions of Nat Turner, Sophie's Choice, This Quiet Mist, Visible Darkness, and A Sharp Morning. He received the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, the Howells Medal, the American Book Award, the Legion of Honor, and the Witness to Justice Award from the Auschwitz Jewish Center Foundation. He lived with his wife, the poet, and activist Rose Styron, for most of his adult life in Roxbury, Connecticut, and in Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts, where he is buried.
