This book is an interesting look into the illiberal mind-set of certain Germans that existed between the two world wars. Many of Junger's criticisms of western-liberal society are still relevant today, and he makes them from a perspective that many (myself included) would find completely foreign. This foreignness is enough to recommend this book to anyone. The focus of the book is the relationship of the individual and society to "pain", which in Junger's use of the word includes anguish, anxiety, and even death in addition to mere physical pain.
