Today, if people are asked about Greek tragedy, they are unlikely to immediately mention Orestes; it is not a common tragedy like Antigone, Oedipus the King, or Medea. Many people, even classicists, have never read it, and it is not included in school and university curricula; but Orestes was one of Euripides' most famous and admired tragedies in antiquity. This play, which Euripides created under the influence of the Sophists and pre-Socratic philosophers, is also considered his most brilliant.
