Orestes, which was performed in 408 BC, tells the story of the events following the matricide of Orestes, son of Agamemnon and brother of Electra.
Today, if people are asked about Greek tragedy, they are unlikely to immediately mention Orestes; it is not a common tragedy like Antigone, Oedipus the King, or Medea. Many people, even classicists, have never read it, and it is not included in school and university curricula; but Orestes was one of Euripides' most famous and admired tragedies in antiquity. This play, which Euripides created under the influence of the Sophists and pre-Socratic philosophers, is also considered his most brilliant.
