Azimi was born in Tehran in 1332. He studied at the University of Tehran and received his master's degree from Suas and his doctorate in history from Oxford University in 1985.
Azimi was the winner of the prize of the International Iranian Studies Association in 2010. The "Mossadegh Foundation" in Geneva has also awarded its prize to the book "In the Pursuit of Democracy, the hundred-year Struggle with Autocracy in a Great Iran". Afaq Admit Azimi's essay won the best-authored essay award of the third term of the Mehtab Mirzaei Award.
