Boken består av åtta mytologiska sagor som härstammar från perioden 900-1300 ef.kr. Ett återkommande tema i sagorna är Lejonet som är en iransk nationell symbol som också symboliserar ariernas ankomst till Iran. Sagorna blottlägger också delar av det sociala liv iranierna levde under den ovannämnda perioden.
