"The Idiot" is a novel written by "Elif Batuman", which was first published in 2017. Celine, the daughter of Turkish immigrants, begins her first year at Harvard. He befriends a charismatic, Serbian classmate named "Svetlana" and, almost by accident, begins a correspondence with an older Hungarian student named "Ivan". With every e-mail exchanged between "Celine" and "Ivan", new and mysterious meanings appear between their writings. At the end of the school year, "Ivan" goes to Budapest, and "Celine" goes to the rural areas of Hungary to teach English in a study program owned by one of "Ivan's" friends. Along the way, he spends two weeks in Paris with "Svetlana". Celine's summer in Europe is different from everything she's heard about the usual experiences of American students, and indeed everyone else.
