This novel looks at life in Japan at the end of the World War II from the perspective of an exile returning home. Caught in Malaya by war, a former naval officer exiled for two decades is forced to confront his loss of home and family just as the nation itself needs to grapple with its own terrible losses of defeat. He decides to return to Japan where he meets old friends and witnesses their difficult circumstances. To spare them pain, he avoids intruding on his remarried wife and their daughter. But the daughter seeks him out and offers a reconciliation which he accepts. But he is unable to adjust to life in Japan.
