The story's unnamed narrator is a woman novelist who lives on an unnamed island—an island where things are disappearing one after another. These disappearances happen both to the objects themselves and to their memory in the minds of the island residents. "Memory Police" officers, are responsible for carrying out disappearances, searching houses at random, and arresting people who have the ability to remember missing objects. When the narrator discovers that his editor, R, is unaffected by these forced amnesias, he creates a secret room in his house to hide R. However, the "memory police" are becoming stricter and more ruthless, while objects and concepts are disappearing at an increasing rate.
