"Sensory Design" is both the title of a book by Donald Norman and an important concept in new design. The main theme is how emotions play an important role in people's ability to understand the world and how they learn new things. In fact, studies show that emotions affect people's information processing and decision making. For example: aesthetic objects are more effective for the user due to their sensory appeal. This is due to the desire that the user feels for the object that is attractive to him, due to the emotional connection he feels with that object.
Norman's approach is based on the classical model. However, he modified the concept to make it suitable for use in design. The three dimensions have new names (visceral, behavioral and reflective levels) and somewhat new content. Norman shows in the book that the design of most objects is understood in all three levels (dimensions). Therefore, a good design should address all three levels. He emphasizes the importance of creating fun and enjoyable products instead of dull and boring products.
Emotional design is an important element when generating ideas for human-centered opportunities. When people can relate to a product, service, system or experience on a personal level, they can more easily understand it. Rather than thinking there is a one-size-fits-all solution, both Norman's three levels of design and Jordan's four design joys can help us design for each individual's needs. Both concepts can be used as a tool to better communicate with the end user for which it is being designed.
