This book is an attempt to understand a mustahab religious practice called "I'tikaf" and a narrative of the experience of attending it; A ritual whose investigation and analysis is one of the neglected topics in the social studies of religion in Iran. In recent years, with the official organization of i'tikaf in mosques, the completely personal form of this ritual has changed to some extent; But in any case, the nature of i'tikaf is completely different from collective religious rituals or rituals such as Arbaeen walking. The present book is a synthesis of three types of ethnographic, phenomenological, and sociological narratives of i'tikaf, without any claim to conform to the stereotypes common in classical research reports, and it is an effort, one side of which is an experimental qualitative study in the field of religious experience, and the other side The other is a story about the life of a group of religious people who travel alone once a year.
