The book opens in a gambling den, Club Cumulus, where Jasper and Nina engage John Van Eck's lawyer, Cornelius Smith, while Kaz and Whelan search his office for Van Eck's estate documents. Kaz then plans to kidnap Van Eck's young, pregnant wife, Alice, and exchange her for the captive Inge. Meanwhile, Jesper's father, Colm, arrives in town as a bank demands that Jesper pay off his debts. When Jesper and Whelan go to meet Colm, they are attacked but manage to escape. Kaz tells Jesper's father to give them three days to receive the money and asks him to wait at a hotel in town.
Afterward, the crew's kidnapping is successful, and they exchange Van Eck's wife for Inge.
