Ismail Balkhi (1347-1295 AH) was born in Balkhab. As a child, he went to Mashhad and studied in the seminary of that city. After the Goharshad mosque uprising, he left Iran and returned to the country. Balkhi was one of the great Islamic fighters and reformers in Afghanistan, and spent fourteen years in the royal prison. Although Balkhi is more prominent as a fighter and social reformer, his literary heritage also has a special place in the contemporary literature of Afghanistan.
