It is often heard, and it is true, the opinion that for the great writers of antiquity each generation creates its own translation. But it is equally true that some translations, renowned for their faithfulness, quality and morality, turn out to be classic texts. Such works with timeless value are indisputable also the translations of the Iliad and the Odyssey that were sculpted by N. Kazantzakis and I. Kakridis, great monuments of modern Greek discourse that gained the appreciation of the philologists and the love of the readers 195 in 1965 respectively.
The two translators believed that the new Greek was right to write monotonously. But the translations of Homeric epics, wanting to make them accessible to the general public, decided to publish them in the polytonic system that everyone was taught and used in those years. With their present reprint in monotonous the two works take the form that translators would have preferred from the outset.
The new edition incorporates any corrections made by I. Kakridis in his personal copy of "The Odyssey". The text is followed by the Notes, as they were in the first version. In the end it was considered appropriate to add an extensive Glossary, which interprets rare, poetic, idiomatic, and other words that readers, especially young people, may not know.
