The Pillars of Society is a play by Henrik Ibsen, first published in 1817. It is Ibsen's first successful realistic play. Carsten Bernick is a prominent and well-known businessman in a small coastal town in Norway, working in the shipping and shipbuilding industries of an old family business. He is now planning his most ambitious project yet: sponsoring the construction of a railway that will connect the coastal town to the main railway line and, in addition, create a fertile valley that Carsten has been secretly buying up. But suddenly, the past comes back to haunt Carsten with two people: Luna Hessel, the woman Carsten Bernick abandoned, and Johan Tønsen, who left town in disgrace fifteen years ago.
