The Sassanid dynasty (224-651 CE) represents, according to many scholars, a sort of “golden age” of Persian art and civilization. Although a large amount of information on these people has been preserved thanks to the work of contemporary Greek and Latin authors – as well as later Arab and Persian ones – little remains in direct sources, represented mainly by some official inscriptions engraved on stone by numismatics and glyptics. This volume, born from the contributions of the greatest scholars and experts in the field, collects ten essays from two conferences held in Italy and the United States between 2010 and 2017. In particular, various aspects of the political, social, and religious plan of the Sassanid empire and the civilizations adjacent to it are discussed here, to revive a very fruitful era for Persian culture and art, attributing particular importance to those that are the testimonies preserved in written texts and works of figurative art.
