The story of this volume is the continuation of the story of the secret of the unicorn ship (the eleventh volume of the collection). Tintin and his friend Captain Haddock hatch a plan to go to the West Indies on a fishing ship named Sirius to discover the treasure of the Red Rackham pirates. Having previously read three manuscripts written by Haddock's ancestor, Sir Francis Haddock, they discover that the treasure is on the 17th-century shipwreck, the Unicorn, off an unknown island. An eccentric inventor offers to help them build a one-man shark submarine, but they refuse his help. They are soon joined by police detectives Thomson and Thompson, and they soon learn that the man has traveled as a smuggler and brought his submarine with him.
