We avoid death, ignore it and avoid talking about it. It is as if if we talk about it, we have encouraged it. We depict him as a grim reaper and a cloaked herald. But death can be peaceful and forgiving and it is inevitable whether we like it or not, so it is better to understand it more. Sue Black faces death every day. This professor of anatomy and forensic anthropologist focuses on corpses and mortal remains in his laboratory, at crime scenes, murders, and mutilations, and when investigating mass deaths from war, accidents, or natural disasters. In this book, he unveils the countless faces of death, which he knows well, and explains how far science has progressed and what he has learned from his work. We expect a book about death to be sad or horrifying, but the book Life in Death is neither sad nor horrifying. The narratives of this book are as attractive as the best crime novels, they are both tragic and humorous. Although there is much about death that will remain unknown to us, Sue Black as an expert witness is the most informed, surest, and most compelling guide to crossing life's final frontier.
Sue Black is one of the world's leading forensic anatomists and anthropologists. His skill has been vital in solving many important criminal cases. In 1999, he was the Senior Forensic Anthropologist on the British Forensic Team's Project for War Crimes Investigation in Kosovo. After the 2004 tsunami, he was one of the first forensic scientists to travel to Thailand to help identify bodies. In 2016 he was awarded the Order of the British Empire for services to forensic anthropology.
