The year is 1877 and war broke out between Russia and the Ottoman Empire. In the treacherous atmosphere of the Russian field army, former diplomat and super detective Erast Fandorin stumbles upon his most puzzling case yet. Its difficulties are only exacerbated by the presence of Varya Suvorova, a deadly serious (and seriously beautiful) femme fatale with revolutionary ideals who disguises herself as a boy to join her respected friend and fiancé. Even after Fandorin saves her life, Varia can hardly bear to thank such a "throne" for her efforts. When Varia's fiancé is accused of espionage and faces execution, he must turn to Fandorin to find the real culprit. A mission that forces him to reckon with his courage, analogical mind, and penetrating gaze.
Gambi Turki is the second novel in the Erast Fandorin series of historical detective novels by the Russian writer Boris Akonin. This book was published in 1998 in Russia. An English translation by Andrew Broomfield was published in 2005 as the third Fandorin novel, following Murder in Leviathan, which follows in the domestic chronology.
The novel is set in Bulgaria during the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878), and Fandorin is investigating the actions of a Turkish agent who thwarts the Russian advance. Each of the 14 chapters, plus an epilogue, is led by a quote from a fictional newspaper article, some written by characters in the novel.
