"A Long Petal of the Sea" is a novel written by Isabel Allende, which was first published in 2019. In the late 1930s, Spain was engulfed in a civil war. When "General Franco" and his fascist forces succeed in overthrowing the government, hundreds of thousands of people try to reach the French border through a mountainous and dangerous journey. Among them is Roser: a young, lonely, and pregnant woman whose life is intertwined with the life of her late lover's brother. In order to survive, these two characters must agree to a marriage that neither of them wants. Condemned to experience the battle between freedom and oppression, Roser and Victor discover that home may be closer to them than they previously thought.
