The Book of the Road is a novel by Naguib Mahfouz, first published in 1964. The imprisonment and financial bankruptcy of a woman named Basima leads to her death. This event causes Saber, Basima's fun-loving and pampered son, to fall into a bad situation and lose his luxurious and blessed life. Therefore, Saber, following his mother's last instructions on his deathbed, searches for his father, a father whom Saber had previously thought was dead. Saber hopes that by finding his father, he can become a burden to him and regain his former luxurious and blessed life. He travels from Alexandria to Cairo and places an advertisement in one of the city's newspapers to find his father. Saber then enters into a secret relationship with two women: a kind and naive girl named Elham, who works in the newspaper's classifieds office and has fallen in love with Saber, and a cunning woman named Karimeh, who is the wife of Saber's elderly landlord.
