Maupassant (1850-1893) first dreamed of success in the theatre and poetry (Des vers, 1880). He was a disciple of Flaubert, who instilled in him the demands of style and encouraged him in his true path: the short story. Maupassant triumphed there with Boule de suif (1880), which was followed by numerous collections (La Maison Tellier, Toine, Contes de la bécasse, Le Rosier de Mme Husson, etc.). A painter of Normandy and Parisian customs, he also knew how to venture towards the disturbing margins of consciousness and fantasy (Le Horla). His novels (Une vie; Bel-Ami, 1885) express a pessimistic and acute vision of the world, confirmed by a great talent for chronicling, journalism, and reporting." Louis Forestier.
