Conrad managed to create a masterpiece during a period when his creative powers were depleted. This work, called The Edge of Shadow, was written just after the outbreak of World War I in 1914. When the war broke out, Conrad was in Poland, but by a stroke of luck he escaped the battlefield and began writing the story upon his return, finishing it at the end of March 1915. He dedicated it to his son who was at the front and to all the young people who at that time, due to the necessity of duty, discipline and sacrifice for the cause of faith, had crossed the edge of the shadow that separates youth from maturity. Thus, The Edge of Shadow describes another case of turning to morality and ethics and is written like a secret partner based on Conrad's memories of his first experience of atheism. The book's clear and straightforward language is reminiscent of the language of The Storm and does not contain the pathetic sentiments that permeate Conrad's later works. The Secret Partner is a story of questions and doubts about the reasons for being and acting, but the ending of The Shadow Border represents a more satisfying ending.
