1979: Two people who have nothing else in common with each other on the way to a hermetically sealed maximum security prison that looks like a hacienda. Luisa, who runs a small farm in Tuscany and raises her five children alone, visits her husband. He was recently transferred here from a normal prison because he killed a prison guard in a fit of rage. Paolo, on the other hand, an early retired philosophy teacher, will meet his only son, who has slipped into terrorism, on this prison island that smells of salt, figs, and flowers. Paolo despises his son's violence and dogmatism, and yet he visits him as often as he can, maintaining the familiar gestures of their former deep affection.
Luisa and Paolo are only able to speak to their relatives after great humiliation. They are both deeply shaken by this experience in different ways. A dramatic incident in prison forces the farmer's wife and the lonely intellectual to stay on the storm-tossed island one night longer than planned. Only much later, in 2009, will the significance of this night become clear to you.
