Bahram Bayzaei is a playwright, theater director, screenwriter, film editor and professor of Iranian literature, art and Iranian studies.
Baizai is the son of Nematullah Baizai, a poet (who is better known by his literary nickname "Zhukai"). The famous poet Adib Bayzaei, one of the most profound poets of the 20th century in Iran, is Bahram's paternal uncle. Bahram Bayzaei's paternal grandfather, Mirza Mohammad Reza Arani ("Ibn Ruh") and his paternal grandfather, Mulla Mohammad Faqih Arani ("Ruh al-Amin") were also prominent poets.
Despite his late start in cinema, Baizaei is often considered the pioneer of a generation of filmmakers whose works are sometimes called the Iranian New Wave. Basho, his little stranger (1986) was selected as "the best Iranian film of all time" in a survey of 150 Iranian critics and experts by Persian film magazine Picture World in November 1999. However, even before his film career began in 1970, he was a prominent playwright (as well as a theater historian), so often considered the greatest playwright of the Persian language and known as the "Persian Shakespeare". . Beidai has been living and teaching at Stanford University in America since 2010.
