In The Discourses (1975), Ricoeur offers his first detailed analysis of Karl Mannheim, Max Weber, and Clifford Geertz, and expands on his published discussions of Louis Althusser and Jürgen Habermas. Of particular importance is Ricoeur's treatment of Marx, which is the subject of five of the eighteen lessons. Ricoeur has long called Marx, Freud, and Nietzsche "the three great masters of skepticism".
Regarding the two subjects of the course - ideology and utopia - after Mannheim, Ricoeur is the first person who tried to discuss these two subjects within a conceptual framework.
