This article is a part of the work that Engels intended to write about "the role of violence in history", and unfortunately it was left unfinished. In the 1880s, the Social Democrats persuaded Engels to edit the valuable "Theory of Coercion" chapter of Anti-Düring's book for independent publication in German. He believed that republishing it alone is not enough to print it in German, but adding an appendix that is theoretically compatible with the latest historical stages is definitely necessary for that.
