The Persian Empire dominated the Near East and the Eastern Mediterranean during the reign of the Achaemenid kings for almost two hundred years. It was the largest Persian empire the world had ever seen. Some historians believe that Cyrus the Achaemenid created some distinctive features in the Achaemenid army and administrative organization. But it is not clear to what extent these were truly his work. The sources of Achaemenid military history are heterogeneous.
