Shahrzad the main character of the story is a writer who is going after her father's death, experiences other events. She also wrote about her aunt's life that is like her. Her father was killed during chain killings and was interested in "Blind owl" by Sadiq Hidayat. From the other side Shahrzad had connection with a man who encouraged her to has political activity. At last, after her unsuccessful suicide she decided to write a story named "Opium".

Shiva Arastui är en av de mer berömda novell- och romanförfattarinnorna i dagens Iran. År 2002 kom hon till Sverige på inbjudan av svenska Penklubben. Denna är hennes fjärde roman. Huvudpersonen Shahrzad är en författare som söker efter sin fars mördare. Under tiden som hon söker svar skaffar hon sig också nya livserfarenheter. Parallellt med sin fars historia berättar hon också en fasters livshistoria som liknar hennes egen.
