The earliest surviving decorated and illuminated manuscripts of the holy Quran and other special books by Iranian artists of books are from the 10th and 11th centuries. From the 12th century onward, various artistic styles and schools in Iranian world such as Shiraz, Herat, Tabriz and Isfahan were developed. Shiraz school was described as one of the most typical centers of illumination and miniature in Persia from the mid of 14th century until the end of 20th century. The early form of illumination used in manuscripts by the Shiraz artists in 14th century appeared simple, and gradually influenced on the quality of the calligraphic style and the like. Timurid colors became more diverse, matured and elegant. The Safavid arts that show a far more unitary development than in any other period of Persian art, reflect the specially elegant designs. In Zand period the variety of colors became much more and even heavy, and more decorative elements were used. The brilliant school of Shiraz acted best and its highest point was reached in the Qajar era, in which art is characterized by an exuberant style and flamboyant use of color.
