Seyyed Mohammad Khatami (born on 21 Mehr 1322) is an Iranian reformist politician who served as the fifth president of Iran from 1376 to 1384. He is the third son of Seyyed Ruhollah Khatami.
Khatami started political activities from 1341 and was a member of Isfahan Islamic Students Association. In 1359, he was the representative of the people of Ardakan and Meibod in the Islamic Council, and in the same year he was appointed as the representative of Seyyed Ruhollah Khomeini and the head of the Keihan Institute. From 1361 to 1371, he was the head of the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance and during the imposed war, the cultural deputy of the command headquarters. He was also in charge of all the forces and the head of the war propaganda headquarters. Khatami was an advisor to the president and head of the National Library since 1371, and he also taught at the university. In 1375, he became a member of the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution by the decree of Ali Khamenei. The day of his victory in the second Khordad election by obtaining more than 20 million votes with 70% of the votes became a name for the internal reformist movement in Iran. He is known by many as the leader of Iran's reforms.
Khatami was the owner of an idea called the dialogue of civilizations, which gained world fame and is known by his name. Based on this idea, the United Nations named 2001 the year of dialogue between civilizations. He is currently the head of the Baran Foundation. In 2009, Newsweek magazine named Mohammad Khatami the fourth most powerful man in Iran.
