Basel Gray (born 1904; died 1989) was a historian, Islamologist, author and director of the Oriental Department of the British Museum. He was born in 1904 in Kensington. He was the son of Charles Gray and Florence Alworthy. His father was a surgeon in the Royal Army Medical Corps. He was admitted to Bradfield College and studied at New College, Oxford University in the 1920s. Archaeologist Roman Girshman invited him to Iran in 1951 to study and explore the ancient works of Susa.
