Cuba, mid-nineteenth century
A ship carrying sinister cargo arrives on the Caribbean island. More than seven hundred women and girls kidnapped from their native Africa arrive to work, until exhaustion, in the sugar cane fields and give birth to children who will also be slaves. Kaweka is one of them, a girl who will experience first-hand the horror of slavery on the estate of the cruel Marquis of Santadoma, but who will soon show those around her that she can commune with Yemayá. This is a fickle goddess who, on occasion, grants her the gift of healing and gives her the strength to lead her brothers of race in the fight for freedom against oppressors who have managed to enslave their bodies, but not their souls.
Madrid, present day
Lita, a young mulatto woman, is the daughter of Concepción, the woman who has spent her entire life serving in the house of the Marquises of Santadoma, in the heart of the Salamanca district, just as her ancestors did in colonial Cuba. Despite having studied and professional ambition, job insecurity forces Lita to turn to the all-powerful lords of Santadoma in search of an opportunity in the bank owned by the Marquis. As she delves into the company's finances and the past of this very wealthy family, the young woman discovers the origins of her fortune and decides to undertake a legal battle in favor of dignity and justice, which both her mother and all the women who gave their lives in the service of whites who never treated them as equals deserve.
A dazzling novel about two brave women who will fight, each with their weapons, racism, and injustice, written by the most important Spanish author of historical novels of our time. A heartfelt tribute to the role of women in their fight for justice and freedom.
